Many forms of beetle infestations exist in this country - we commonly call them "Woodworm". Our CSRT qualified remedial treatment surveyor will identify the type of beetle infestation and then establish the correct treatment for the beetle type.
Our specialist treatment teams will then deal with the infestation using products that are not harmful to your health and replace any severely damaged timbers allowing continued occupancy of your property during treatment.
Dry Rot and Wet Rot
The dry rot fungus "Serpula Lacrymans" is commonly known as the cancer of a building.
The most important point to understand is that for both dry and wet rot water / dampness have to be present. If an area is dry then the fungus is unable to use timber as its food source - no water means no rot.
Like all wood destroying fungi dry rot has essential needs and prefers dark, damp, stagnant conditions.
Unfortunately this normally means that it has spread extensively before recognition.
The actual decay of the wood is the reverse of its formation, dry rot attacks and breaks down the wood causing it to lose weight and strength.
Strands of the fungus can develop allowing it to spread over inert materials such as mortar and brick - this is one of the main issues that makes rot so destructive.
Typical causes are from either water ingress or timbers being in contact with damp masonry.
Treatment will initially be locating and rectifying the source of the water. This may require works to the external facade of the building, guttering, down pipes or the installation of a damp course system.
It is then essential to promote and maintain rapid drying of the affected timber.
Any infected wood can then be removed and replaced with pre treated timbers using joist hangers if necessary. Where possible affected timbers can also be treated insitu by injecting them with preservatives.
To ensure that the outbreak is contained the whole area including masonry will then be sterilised.
All of our works are covered by a company guarantee. A seperate GPI insurance backed guarantee is also available.
